ASSAULTS AGAINST HOSPITAL WORKERS HAVE INCREASED DURING THE PANDEMIC IN SOME LOCATIONS.

NEARLY TWO-THIRDS OF THE AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS REPORTED ON THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA CAMPUS IN 2020 HAPPENED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA HOSPITALS AND CLINICS.

BULLOCK SAYS STAFF SHOULDN’T HAVE TO ENDURE ASSAULTS AS THEY CARE FOR SICK PATIENTS AND HIS DEPARTMENT HAS SECURED SPACE FOR A MEDICAL CAMPUS SAFETY CENTER AND WILL ASSIGN FOUR NEW OFFICERS TO PROVIDE SECURITY AT THE IOWA CITY HOSPITAL.

THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN ASSAULTS THIS PAST YEAR AT BOTH SIOUX CITY HOSPITALS.

POLICE REPORT THAT THERE WERE SIX REPORTED ASSAULTS OF STAFF AT MERCYONE AND FIVE AT UNITYPOINT ST. LUKES.

IN ALL, 12 STAFF MEMBERS WERE ASSAULTED, 6 AT EACH HOSPITAL WITH 8 NURSES ASSAULTED AND 4 SECURITY GUARDS, .

PATIENTS BEING TREATED FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS WERE THE SUSPECTS IN FIVE OF THE SIX ASSAULTS.

IN MOST CASES, RELEASES WERE SIGNED AND NO CHARGES WERE FILED.

A HOSPITAL IN BRANSON, MISSOURI, RECENTLY PROVIDED UP TO 400 STAFF MEMBERS WITH PANIC BUTTONS ON THEIR EMPLOYEE BADGES AFTER VIOLENT ATTACKS AGAINST HEALTH CARE WORKERS THERE TRIPLED IN THE PAST YEAR.
