A BILL SIGNED INTO LAW WEDNESDAY BY GOVERNOR KIM REYNOLDS WILL AWARD GRANTS TO COMPANIES THAT EXPAND BROADBAND IN IOWA.

REYNOLDS CALLED THE PLAN A RESPONSE TO A “GLARING NEED” IN THE STATE:

KIMBB1 OC…DID JUST THAT. :20

MOST OF THE COMPANIES GETTING THE GRANTS MUST PROVIDE BROADBAND SERVICE THAT HAS UPLOAD AND DOWNLOAD SPEEDS OF 100 MEGABITS PER SECOND, ALTHOUGH COMPANIES PLANNING TO EXTEND SLOWER SPEED INTERNET ACCESS TO SPARSELY POPULATED AREAS COULD QUALIFY.

LEGISLATORS AND THE GOVERNOR HAVE AGREED TO SET ASIDE 100-MILLION DOLLARS IN STATE MONEY FOR THE BROADBAND GRANTS.

THE BILL HAD PASSED THE HOUSE AND SENATE UNANIMOUSLY.
