A NEW USE OF FORCE LAW IS IN EFFECT IN SOUTH DAKOTA. GOVERNOR KRISTI NOEM RECENTLY SIGNED A HOUSE BILL THAT EXPANDS THE STATE’S STAND YOUR GROUND LAWS.

THE NEW MEASURE GIVES LEGAL IMMUNITY TO SOME WHO USE DEADLY FORCE TO PROTECT THEIR HOME AND FAMILY.

THE PERSON CLAIMING IMMUNITY MUST BE USING DEADLY FORCE TO PREVENT AN IMMINENT THREAT, CAN’T BE DOING ANYTHING ILLEGAL, AND MUST HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE IN THE PLACE WHERE THE INCIDENT HAPPENS.

THOSE SUPPORTING THE LAW SAY IT COULD REDUCE CRIME, WHILE THOSE OPPOSED SAY THE WORDING IS TOO VAGUE.
