THE HEAD OF THE SIOUX CITY EDUCATION ASSOCIATION IS CONCERNED THAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS BEING USED AS POLLING PLACES ON NOVEMBER 3RD COULD POTENTIALLY CREATE UNSAFE CONDITIONS FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ON ELECTION DAY.

KRIS SNAVELY IS PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL TEACHERS UNION GROUP AND OBJECTED AT MONDAY NIGHT’S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING THAT 27 OF 28 VOTING PRECINCTS IN SIOUX CITY WERE PLACED IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS:

OC…………ELIGIBLE TO VOTE. :29

SNAVELY WAS ALSO CONCERNED THAT SINCE POLLS CLOSE AT 9PM, THE SCHOOL CUSTODIAL STAFF WOULD NOT HAVE TIME TO SANITIZE THE AREAS OF THE BUILDINGS WHERE VOTING TOOK PLACE FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL DAY.

SHE ASKED THE BOARD TO CONSIDER NOT HOLDING CLASSES IN BUILDINGS ON NOVEMBER 3RD:

OC……….NO SCHOOL THAT DAY. :17

SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT DR. PAUL GAUSMAN SAYS BY LAW THE DISTRICT CANNOT TURN ANY VOTERS AWAY:

OC……….WHICH WAS. :23

OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE MANAGER BRIAN FAHRENDHOLZ SAYS THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS WILL REMAIN GUN FREE ON ELECTION DAY, BUT THE SCHOOL’S MASK MANDATE CAN’T BE ENFORCED ON THE VOTERS.

HE SAYS THE COUNTY AUDITOR WILL HELP ADDRESS THAT ISSUE:

OC……WILL BE WEARING MASKS. :17

SIOUX CITY POLICE WILL ALSO PATROL THE SCHOOL PARKING LOTS ON ELECTION DAY TO HELP WITH SECURITY.

THIS WILL BE THE FIRST YEAR SINCE 2004 THAT MOST LOCAL VOTING PRECINCTS WILL BE IN PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDINGS.
