Authorities say a man fatally shot by an officer during a standoff in Council Bluffs is suspected of killing two people earlier – one on Sunday, one Wednesday before he was killed.

Police also say they’ve charged a woman who’d been with the man during the slayings and when their pickup truck crashed during a police chase.

Court records say 44-year-old April Montello-Roberts is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and other crimes.

APRIL MONTELLO-ROBERTS

Police say she and 28-year-old Troy Petersen planned to rob and then discussed killing 52-year-old Jerrot Clark, whose body was found Sunday.

A court document says Montello-Roberts was armed when she and Petersen broke into a Council Bluffs residence Wednesday to take a hostage they could use as they were being pursued by officers.

The document says Petersen fatally shot 51-year-old Stephen Carlson there.

Police say Petersen was holding a gun on Montello-Roberts in the pickup when an officer shot him in the head.
