ARMED SUSPECT FATALLY SHOT DURING TRAFFIC STOP ON TRI-VIEW AVENUE

AN ARMED SUSPECT IS DEAD AFTER BEING SHOT BY A POLICE OFFICER THURSDAY NIGHT IN SIOUX CITY.

36 YEAR OLD DANIEL RIEDMANN OF DAKOTA DUNES DIED AFTER BEING SHOT DURING A TRAFFIC STOP IN THE 12OO BLOCK OF TRI-VIEW AVENUE AROUND 10:20PM:

POLICE CHIEF DOUG YOUNG SAYS RIEDMANN WAS A PASSENGER IN AN S-U-V DRIVEN BY 39 YEAR OLD MELINDA BENOIT OF SIOUX CITY:

RIEDMANN HAD A HANDGUN IN THE VEHICLE BUT IT’S NOT KNOWN IF HE WAS BRANDISHING IT WHEN HE WAS SHOT.

POLICE RECOVERED THE WEAPON FROM THE S-U-V.

RIEDMANN WAS TRANSPORTED TO MERCY MEDICAL CENTER WHERE HE DIED A HALF HOUR LATER.

RIEDMANN HAD A LONG CRIMINAL RECORD, DATING BACK 18 YEARS, INCLUDING NUMEROUS THEFT, FORGERY AND DRUG CHARGES.

THE OFFICER INVOLVED IN THE SHOOTING IS A THREE YEAR VETERAN OF THE FORCE WHOSE NAME HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.

HE’S BEEN PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE.

NO OFFICERS WERE INJURED IN THE INCIDENT.

THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN CALLED IN TO OVERSEE THE CASE.
