An inmate from Sioux City who escaped from a maximum-security prison is at the center of another serious security incident at a second prison.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says 26 year old Justin Kestner used a “crude piece of metal” Wednesday to assault an officer at Anamosa State Penitentiary.

Authorities say the assault came after Kestner was able to remove himself from a health services room.

The officer suffered several facial contusions and was treated at a hospital.

Last year, Kestner managed to slither out of one of the state’s most highly-secure cells at the Fort Madison prison.

Kestner climbed through piping and a vent to reach the roof, then descended down the downspout. He stole a car but was captured within hours.

He was serving a 35 year sentence for two counts of first degree theft in Woodbury County and other charges from Lee County.

Prison authorities say the assault will be referred for prosecution.
