The mayors of Sioux City and Storm Lake are part of a group that’s pushing the Iowa legislature and the governor to raise the sales tax to put money into a trust fund for water quality and recreation projects.

The Iowa Water and Land Legacy wants a three-eights of a cent increase in the tax to fund the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund.

Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott is supporting the effort:

OC…….a great program. ;16

Storm Lake Mayor Jon Kruse says funding is needed in the trust fund to build on what’s been done with other resources.

OC………ag runoff. ;21

Kruse says improved water quality leads to more development and growth.

OC…….in our community” :19

Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett is a former legislator, and says getting the amendment to Iowa’s Constitution passed that allows for the trust fund is not something that happens very often.

The amendment was passed six years ago, but there hasn’t been an increase in the sales tax since then to fund it.
