FIERY ACCIDENT BRINGS HALT TO HOMECOMING GAME (UPDATE)

CHARGES ARE PENDING FOLLOWING THE COLLISION OF A MOTORCYCLE AND PICK TRUCK THAT EXPLODED INTO A FIREBALL FRIDAY NIGHT AT A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME IN LE MARS.

LE MARS FIRE CHIEF DAVE SCHIPPER WAS ATTENDING THE GAME BETWEEN LE MARS GEHLEN AND WOODBURY CENTRAL AND WAS ONE OF HUNDREDS THAT WITNESSED THE FIERY COLLISION.

TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THE CRASH, BUT RECEIVED TREATMENT IMMEDIATELY FROM AN AMBULANCE CREW THAT WAS WORKING AT THE FOOTBALL GAME.

SCHIPPER ORDERED OFFICIALS TO STOP THE GAME AND EVACUATE THE VISITING BLEACHER AREA BECAUSE OF THE FIRE:

THE GAME RESUMED AFTER A HALF HOUR DELAY.

THE DRIVER OF THE MOTORCYCLE, 21 YEAR OLD DILLON
MCKINNEY OF LE MARS, WAS AIRLIFTED TO A SIOUX CITY HOSPITAL WITH SEVERE BUT NON LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES.

HIS PASSENGER, 23 YEAR OLD SAMANTHA PRIEKSAT OF LE MARS, WAS TREATED AND RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL.

THE DRIVER OF THE PICK-UP, 19 YEAR OLD JOSEPH SCHLEIS AND HIS MALE PASSENGER WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE THE BURNING VEHICLE AND WERE NOT INJURED.

TWO PEOPLE WERE HOSPITALIZED FRIDAY NIGHT WHEN A MOTORCYCLE COLLIDED WITH A PICK UP TRUCK AND CAUGHT FIRE BEHIND THE BLEACHERS OF A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME IN LE MARS.

THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE LE MARS GEHLEN HOMECOMING GAME AGAINST WOODBURY CENTRAL.

OFFICIALS STOPPED THE GAME AND THE VISITING BLEACHERS WERE EVACUATED BECAUSE OF THE FIRE.

THE GAME RESUMED AFTER A HALF HOUR DELAY.

BOTH OF THE INJURED WERE TRANSPORTED TO SIOUX CITY HOSPITALS.

THEIR NAMES AND CONDITIONS HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED AND THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.
