She didn’t win Olympic gold but Shelby Houlihan definitely won the hearts of Siouxland as she competed in the women’s 5,000 meter finals at the Rio Olympics Friday night.
A few hundred Houlifans attended a “watch party” at the Sioux City Convention Center to cheer as she finished 11th overall in the race with a time of 15:08.89
Houlihan’s uncle, Bob Prince, was among those rooting for her:
OC………a good thing. ;20
The 23 year old Houlihan is an East High School graduate, and All-American runner at Arizona State University.
Prince says people expected her to make the Olympic team in 2020, but she surprised many by making Team USA this year:
OC……..her future. ;12
Vivian Cheruiyot set an Olympic record to win the gold in the 5,000 meters, coming from behind to beat favorite Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia in 14 minutes 26.17 seconds.
