Years before Shelby Houlihan’s journey to the Olympics, another local high school graduate competed in the Summer Olympic Games.

Central High School graduate George Howard Lambert competed in the Modern Pentathlon, winning silver and bronze medals with Team USA at the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games.

Memorabilia from the late athlete’s career was recently donated to the Sioux City Public Museum, and Museum Director Steve Hansen unveiled the items Friday:

Those items had been in a box in a Sioux City home the last 50 years.

Some research by Hansen led to the discovery of more of Lambert’s Olympic items:

Lambert won 1st place in several events in the 3rd Pan-American Games in 1959 in Chicago.

Hansen says a portion of the collection will be featured as part of a new permanent exhibit featuring local sports history that is planned for late 2017:

Museum staff members are actively seeking local sports memorabilia to be showcased.
