(Sioux City, IA) – Morningside College is ranked first in the nation in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll released on Sept. 21. The ranking sets up a classic battle between No. 1-ranked teams that will take place this Thursday at Morningside’s Elwood Olsen Stadium between Morningside and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, which is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III.
The Mustangs, ranked second in last week’s poll, jumped to No. 1 after previous No. 1 Marian University lost 30-21 at No. 11 Robert Morris University last Saturday.
Morningside is off to a 3-0 start with blowout victories of 77-17 against Sterling College, 86-10 against Nebraska Wesleyan University, and 49-0 against Dordt College. Morningside’s high powered offense leads the nation with averages of 70.7 points and 696.3 yards total offense per game, while the Mustangs’ defense leads the nation by allowing an average of only 180.7 yards per game and is second in scoring defense with an average of 9.0 points per game.
Morningside has a 115-23 record for a .833 winning percentage since the start of the 2004 season and has made 11 consecutive post-season appearances in the NAIA Championship Series for the nation’s longest active streak.
Wisconsin-Whitewater has won six of the last eight NCAA III National Championships and has a 34-game winning streak for the nation’s longest active streak in collegiate football.
Morningside is one of four teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in the NAIA Top 25. Northwestern College is ranked 10th, Doane College is 13th, and Dakota Wesleyan University is 17th.
