Sioux City School Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman says members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas who are planning a protest next Monday at East High School will not be allowed on school grounds.
Gausman says the school district will work closely with the Sioux City Police Department to ensure that no outside activity disrupts the educational process.
He says the group may be gathered on public property adjacent to or near the school, but they will not be permitted to gather on school property or to block or impede traffic around any of our schools.
Gausman says this situation presents an opportunity to show students how to handle challenging situations in life, and extend understanding of the rights of free speech and freedom of assembly.
He says the district does not condone any action that demonstrates intolerance and bigotry or that promotes discrimination.
