Xcel Energy says approximately 28,000 customers in South Dakota are still without power as of 5pm Wednesday after a winter storm walloped the area.
James Wilcox with Xcel says crews have been able to restore power to an estimated 25,000 people but adverse weather conditions are creating new outages.
More than 230 crew members from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and contractors from Iowa are working to restore electricity to those in south central and southeastern South Dakota. The crew will increase to 350 by Thursday.
Interstate 90 remains closed between Mitchell and Chamberlain as of 5pm Wednesday, and authorities don't know when that highway will reopen. There are a number of stranded vehicles on the highway east of Wall.
South Dakota Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Craig Price says the Highway Patrol has responded to 52 traffic crashes in the past 24 hours, and 12 involved injuries.
