B-P-I is suspending operations at three of their four plants where they manufacture lean finely textured beef.
A company spokesman says B-P-I is expected to continue operations at its Dakota City plant but suspend work at Waterloo, and plants in Texas and Kansas.
B-P-I will hold a news conference at 3pm at their Dakota Dunes headquarters. The company suspension comes amid a public outcry over concerns about the use of ammonia in processing its beef product.
That process has been safely used for around 20 years but recently became a target of activists seeking to have it banned from supermarkets and school lunches.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture decided to allow school districts to stop using it. Some retail chains have pulled products containing it.
