A SEGMENT OF SIOUX CITY’S DOWNTOWN SKYWALK SYSTEM REMAINS CLOSED AFTER A GARBAGE TRUCK STRUCK THE BOTTOM OF IT MONDAY MORNING.

POLICE REPORTS SAY THE WESTERN DISPOSAL TRUCK WAS EMPTYING A DUMPSTER ON PIERCE STREET NEAR THE MARTIN APARTMENTS WHEN THE LIFT STRUCK THE BOTTOM OF THE SKYWALK BETWEEN 4TH AND 5TH STREETS AROUND 6AM.

THE LIFT PENETRATED THROUGH THE METAL AND TORE OUT SOME OF THE INSULATION.

THE CITY CLOSED OFF THAT SEGMENT OF THE SKYWALK TO PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC.

CITY ENGINEER GORDON PHAIR SAYS THAT A LOCAL STRUCTURAL ENGINEER IS ASSESSING THE DAMAGE, AND THE SKYWALK WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL IT IS DETERMINED TO BE SAFE FOR PEDESTRIANS.

THE CITY PREVIOUSLY MIS-IDENTIFIED THE COMPANY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE TO THE SKYWALK.
