South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the second officer involved shooting this week in the state.

Mitchell Police Officer Russ Stevenson responded to a disturbance call at a Mitchell residence just before 2 a.m. Friday and encountered the suspect, 37-year-old Curtis James Meyer, who was armed with a gun.

The incident escalated and as the two men struggled, Stevenson shot Meyer with the suspect’s gun.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says Meyer died at the scene.

Jackley says the DCI will issue a case report within 30 days to be reviewed by him for a final determination on the officer’s actions.
