Dakota County authorities say a truck driver was attempting to turn right at a rural intersection when his vehicle was struck by a train Monday near Homer, Nebraska.

45 year old John Levasseur was driving a semi with a side dump trailer at the intersection of Highway 77 and 225th Street around 4:30pm.

The Dakota County Sheriff says Levasseur failed to complete the turn in time and the oncoming train struck his trailer.

The crossing has no safety arms to stop traffic when a train approaches.

It’s the second time in 13 months a train has struck a vehicle at that crossing.

Levasseur was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

He is hospitalized there in fair condition.
