The operator of the Argosy riverboat casino in Sioux City has asked the Iowa Supreme Court to keep the casino from being closed next week.

Court documents filed Wednesday for Argosy parent Penn National Gaming Co. asked the court to stay a district judge’s ruling on Monday.

Polk County Judge Eliza Ovrom said Penn National had a week to persuade the high court to grant a stay. Otherwise the casino must close this coming Tuesday.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission had originally ordered the casino to close July 1.

Recent stays granted by Judge Ovrum have allowed the casino to remain open through July 21st.

Penn National lost its bid last year to operate a land-based casino in Sioux City.

A Hard Rock casino and hotel run by Sioux City Entertainment is scheduled to open August 1st.
