A truck driver was injured when his semi truck and trailer plunged into the Floyd River on Highway 75 near Merrill early Wednesday morning.
Authorities say the truck crashed through the barricades around 2am and eventually ended up partially on the riverbank with the cab in the Floyd River.
The driver, 55 year old Michael R. Wichner of Sioux Falls, had to be extricated from the cab and was transported to Mercy Medical Center by Merrill ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators say Wichner was traveling northbound on Highway 75 on the north edge of Merrill when he lost control of the semi, struck a bridge rail, entered the east ditch and rolled into the river.
The semi, owned by B-T Inc of LeMars, was hauling beef trimmings to be used to make sausage.
A spokesman with B-T says those trimmings will now be disposed of at a landfill.
