DAUGAARD DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY

SOUTH DAKOTA GOVERNOR DENNIS DAUGAARD HAS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY AND OPENED THE STATE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER TUESDAY MORNING TO RESPOND TO SEVERE FLOODING CAUSED BY TORRENTIAL RAINS IN SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA.

HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS MUCH OF THAT AREA CLOSED ROADS, INCLUDING INTERSTATE 29, AND FLOODED STREETS AND FIELDS IN SEVERAL COUNTIES.

FLOWS HAVE GREATLY INCREASED IN THE SOUTHERN REACH OF THE BIG SIOUX RIVER.

GOVERNOR DAUGAARD MET IN ELK POINT WITH EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS TUESDAY, AND TOURED FLOOD-AFFECTED AREAS IN LINCOLN AND MINNEHAHA COUNTIES.
