SIOUXLAND—Federal Emergency Management Agency officials are urging South Dakotans affected by recent flooding to register for assistance now before Hurricane Irene hits the East Coast and the agency is flooded with applicants.

Residents of Union counties are eligible to register for aid by calling 800-621-FEMA or online at
www.disasterassistance.gov .

FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Mark Neveau says in a news release that if Hurricane Irene hits a large population along the East Coast this weekend, a surge of calls could place heavy demand
on the registration line.

So far, more than 350 households in South Dakota have registered for federal assistance due to flooding that occurred between March 11 and July 22.
